Nutrition Advice
Good food is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to look after your pet’s long-term health.
Nutrition Advice at Quakers Hill Veterinary Hospital
Alongside regular exercise and routine veterinary care, thoughtful feeding is one of the best things you can do for your pet’s wellbeing. The right diet supports healthy growth, steady energy, a strong immune system and a comfortable weight — and it can add good years to your pet’s life.
Working out what to feed can be confusing, so the team at Quakers Hill Veterinary Hospital is happy to talk through your pet’s diet at any appointment. We can review what they are eating now, suggest sensible portion sizes and recommend a change if it would help.

The Building Blocks of a Balanced Diet
Whatever you choose to feed, a complete diet needs to cover five essentials:
- Water — the most important nutrient of all. Around 70% of your pet’s body is water, so fresh, clean water should always be within reach.
- Carbohydrates — an energy source drawn from sugars, starches and plant fibre, helping keep the brain and muscles active.
- Fats — energy plus healthy cell structure and better nutrient absorption. Too much, however, contributes to obesity and related problems such as diabetes, heart disease and arthritis.
- Protein — supplies the amino acids used to build enzymes, hormones and a healthy immune system, and keeps coat, skin and nails in good condition. Cats and dogs need quality animal protein.
- Vitamins and minerals — regulate the body’s systems. Calcium and phosphorus build strong bones, while antioxidants such as vitamins E and C help support immunity in times of stress.
Advice That Changes With Your Pet
Nutritional needs shift as pets grow, and again as they start to slow down. Puppies and kittens, adults, seniors, pregnant pets and pets living with a medical condition all do best on something slightly different. Ask our team at your next visit and we will help you match the food to the pet in front of us.
